Cerebral palsy can be caused by damage to one or more parts of the brain.

This damage normally occurs

  • during the pregnancy
  • during birth or delivery of the child
  • shortly after birth
  • or during infancy

A child’s brain deprived of oxygen during child birth can result in cerebral palsy and in certain forms of cerebral palsy including quadriplegic cerebral palsy, with a generalized rigidity of muscular tone or spasticity.

Other difficulties such as epilepsy and related problems can arise which are permanent and need further and prolonged care.

Spastic Cerebral Palsy is the most common form of cerebral palsy, and often it is caused by prolonged partial deprivation of oxygen to the child prior to delivery. Existence of the injury will be evident from an MRI scan of the brain.

Oxygen deprivation or brain oxygen starvation to the brain of the child before birth which causes swelling of the brain is called hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy.

Some of the symptoms of this condition usually include seizures, disordered muscular tone, cessation of breathing, deep coma and even in some cases death.

Whilst the vast majority of child births in this country complete successfully and without complication, medical mishaps or medical mistakes, or the failure to take adequate notice by medical professionals of certain medical developments can occur.
